TRASH Program

The TRASH program started in 2025, and is a partnership between Artstart and Recology.  I was the lead mentor with the inaugural group of five young people between the ages of 16 and 24.  We had access to Recology's MRF (material recovery facility) where we went "picking" for items that are not recyclable but ended up in the recycling system.  Over the course of seven weeks, we fabricated pieces of art.  These art pieces were part of a series of events and exhibitions.

Working with this group of young people, while having the focus of the program around our wastestream was an absolute delight (other than the smell that started accumulating around our found items in the yard).  The dedicated space and time to both support these artists in their own creative processes, while also creating work myself felt like a dream come true and I'm looking forward to the next year's program!
